Chatting with Anthony Robles about his inspiring life and the new film “Unstoppable”

Anthony Robles is an NCAA champion wrestler, author, motivational speaker and Desert Financial Credit Union spokesperson. Robles is known for his incredible achievements in wrestling despite being born with one leg and is capturing the spotlight with the release of the new movie Unstoppable, which was inspired by his life. Desert Financial’s Executive Vice President, Cathy Graham, interviewed Robles about his upcoming movie and here is what he had to say.

More about his Unstoppable journey

Born on July 20, 1988, with only one leg, Robles faced numerous challenges, including bullying and doubt from those who questioned his ability to compete. Robles began wrestling in ninth grade in Mesa, Arizona, and by his senior year of high school, he had won two Arizona State championships and became a high school National Champion. Despite adversity and challenges from peers, he was fueled with determination to succeed. Fast forward to college at Arizona State University, where he became a three-time All-American and won the 2011 NCAA individual wrestling championship in the 125-pound weight class. His remarkable achievements earned him the prestigious Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the 2011 ESPY Awards. Robles was also inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012.

From the mat to the silver screen

Unstoppable was directed by William Goldenberg, in his feature directorial debut. The film premiered in September 2024, at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film is based on Robles' 2012 autobiography Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion. The film was produced by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Anthony Robles. The film stars Emmy winner Jharrel Jerome as Anthony Robles and Jennifer Lopez as Robles’ mother, and also features Don Cheadle, Michael Peña and Bobby Cannavale.
